At Steamboat Pilates, our mission is to inspire people to find their body’s maximum potential through core strength and balanced movement. We strive to help our clients create that connection within their body and apply it to their everyday lives. No matter what your goals are, we can help you achieve them and teach you how to help yourself by “re-modeling” old postural patterns and stale exercise programs. You WILL feel lengthened, inspired, and enlightened by what your body is capable of doing and feeling. We work with all clientele from professional athletes, to non-exercisers looking for a fresh start, and everything in between. Pilates is for EVERYONE no matter what your goals or fitness levels. We’ll try to send you out the door smiling with your head a little higher and clearer, your heart a little lighter, and your body a lot more centered. It is time to “maximize your body’s potential!” You deserve it! |

Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates. Born in 1880 in Germany he suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Left with disproportioned limbs, he was forced to take matters into his own hands. He created a system of exercises to help re-gain some alignment and functionality. These exercises were later grouped together to form the mat exercises that we benefit from today. His work later as a nurse in World War I proved to be some of his most influential. While treating injured patients in a hospital, he realized that the patients were very sedentary despite maybe only one limb being damaged. He attached springs to the bed-frame to allow them to work their center and their other limbs to stay strong. This forward thinking allowed his patients to stay strong enough to survive a deadly flu outbreak that overtook Britain in the early 1900’s. It was at this time, the benefits of Pilates became very apparent. After moving to New York in 1926, celebrity clients caught on to the incredible way that Pilates toned and lengthened their muscles, and it hasn’t stopped to this day. Pilates died in 1967 with a loyal following, an amazing physique (for being in his late 80’s), and a framework for how to achieve a healthy spine, strong core, and a “zest for life.” |
